Privacy policy
Jolenta is an app for saving quotes from books. It's made by Kellen LaGroon ("I" in this policy). This policy explains what the app keeps on your phone, what it sends elsewhere, and the choices you have.
The short version: your quotes, books, notes and page photos stay on your phone. There's no account and no ads. The app sends anonymous usage statistics, which you can turn off, and it sends book searches to Open Library to find books.
What stays on your phone
Everything you put into Jolenta is saved only on your phone: quotes, notes, books, feels, tags, page photos, your name (if you enter one) and your settings. I can't see any of it.
- Text recognition (reading the words on a page photo) runs on your phone. Page photos aren't sent anywhere.
- Backups and exports are saved or shared only where you choose, for example a folder on your phone or a cloud folder you pick. When you save to a cloud service, that service's own privacy policy applies.
- Android's automatic Google Drive backup is turned off for Jolenta, so your quotes don't go to Google unless you choose to back them up there. Moving to a new phone with Android's phone-to-phone transfer still brings Jolenta along.
What the app sends
1. Book searches, to Open Library
When you scan a book's barcode or search for a book, the ISBN or the words you typed are sent to Open Library, a free book database run by the Internet Archive, to find the book and its cover. Like any website, Open Library receives your phone's internet address with the request. Its use of that information is covered by the Internet Archive's terms and privacy policy. Nothing else from the app is sent to Open Library.
2. Anonymous usage statistics, to PostHog
To see what to improve, Jolenta sends anonymous statistics to PostHog, an analytics service, which stores them in the European Union. They include:
- What happens in the app, as counts and choices: for example, that a quote was saved, how long capturing it took, whether the recognized text was corrected, how many feels and tags it has, that a book was added (looked up or typed in), that a backup was made, and which kinds of screens were opened.
- Problems, such as an error and where in the app's code it happened.
- App and device details: app version, app language, phone model, Android version, language and time zone settings.
- A random ID created when the app is installed, so visits from the same install can be counted together (for example, to see whether people keep using the app). It isn't linked to your name, email or any account.
- Approximate location (country, region and city), which PostHog works out from your internet address. The internet address itself is not stored.
The statistics never include your quotes, notes, book titles, authors, names, search words or photos.
You can turn them off in Profile → Share usage statistics. When it's off, the app stops sending statistics. Statistics are kept for 30 days and then deleted.
What I don't do
- No account, sign-in or email collection.
- No ads, and no advertising ID.
- No selling or sharing of your information with anyone for advertising or any other purpose.
Children
Jolenta isn't made for children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices and rights
- Statistics: turn them off at any time in Profile.
- Your data: it's on your phone, so you control it. Delete quotes in the app, or uninstall Jolenta to remove everything (backups you saved elsewhere stay where you put them).
- Because the statistics are anonymous and not linked to you, I generally can't find or separate the ones that came from your phone. If you have a question or request about your information, email me and I'll help where I can.
Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, UK or California), you may have legal rights over your personal information, such as to access or delete it. Email jolenta.app@gmail.com to use them.
Changes
If this policy changes, I'll update this page and the date at the top. Important changes will also be mentioned in the app's release notes.
